There is no Ryder Cup in 2026. The pandemic pushed the 2020 match at Whistling Straits back a year, and every edition since has followed it into odd years. Europe won the last one at Bethpage Black in September 2025. The next is the Ryder Cup 2027 at Adare Manor in Ireland, a hundred years after the first match was played in Massachusetts. Here is where things stand.
When and Where Is the 2027 Ryder Cup?
The 46th Ryder Cup will be played at Adare Manor in County Limerick, Ireland. Competition runs Friday 17 to Sunday 19 September 2027, after four build-up days from Monday 13 September. It is the centenary staging of the contest.
Ireland last hosted in 2006, when Europe won at The K Club. Adare Manor is a Tom Fazio design that was extensively renovated in 2017.
The Ryder Cup alternates between European and American venues. After Adare Manor it goes to Hazeltine National in Minnesota in 2029.
The Ryder Cup Format Explained
The Ryder Cup uses a format that is unique in professional golf, combining multiple match play formats across three days:
Day One - Foursomes and Fourballs
The first day features two sessions:
- Foursomes (Alternate Shot) - two-player teams alternate hitting the same ball. Player A tees off on odd holes, Player B tees off on even holes, and they alternate shots until the ball is holed. This format demands exceptional teamwork, trust and compatible playing styles
- Four-ball (Best Ball) - each player plays their own ball throughout the hole, and the lower score of the two partners counts as the team's score. This format allows for more aggressive play, as one partner can take risks knowing the other has a safe score
Four matches are played in each session, producing eight points on Day One.
Day Two - Foursomes and Fourballs
Day Two follows the same format as Day One, with another eight points available. Captains can change their pairings between sessions, adding a strategic element as they respond to form and momentum.
Day Three - Singles
The final day features 12 singles matches, one point each, for a total of 12 points. Every player on both teams plays a singles match, and this is where the Ryder Cup is typically decided. Bethpage proved it in 2025. Europe led 11½-4½ going into Sunday and still needed the final matches to get over the line.
Total Points
With 28 total points available across the three days (8 + 8 + 12), the first team to reach 14.5 points wins the Ryder Cup. If the score finishes 14-14, the team holding the trophy retains it. For 2027 that is Europe.
Team Qualification - How Players Make the Team
Both sides have published their 2027 systems. Both use the same split: six automatic qualifiers and six captain's picks.
Team USA
American qualification is managed by the PGA of America, and for 2027 it starts from scratch. Points are earned only in the 2027 season, on the PGA Tour, from The American Express in January through the BMW Championship in August. The top six on the points list after the BMW Championship qualify automatically. Captain Jim Furyk makes his six picks in the week of 30 August, after the Tour Championship.
Six picks out of twelve is a lot of discretion. Captains must balance current form, Ryder Cup experience, course suitability and team chemistry, and every one of those choices gets argued over.
Team Europe
European qualification began at the British Masters at The Belfry, 27-30 August 2026, and closes on Sunday 22 August 2027. Players must be members of the DP World Tour. Points come from Race to Dubai Ranking tournaments, the four majors included, and PGA Tour events also count, with the specific events confirmed as the schedules are set. The top six qualify automatically. Captain Luke Donald names his six picks in the week commencing 30 August 2027.
The picks are entirely Donald's call. Results matter, and so does the OWGR world ranking a player carries into that final week.
The LIV Golf Question
The loudest version of this question was settled at Bethpage. LIV Golf players were on both teams in 2025. Jon Rahm played for Europe. Bryson DeChambeau played for the United States and halved his singles with Matt Fitzpatrick.
For 2027 the rules on paper are what matter. Europe requires DP World Tour membership. The US points list runs on PGA Tour events in 2027, so a player who rarely plays them has fewer chances to earn points and leans harder on a captain's pick.
Key Players to Watch
Qualification for 2027 is only just under way, so no team is close to set. These are players from the 2025 sides.
Potential Team USA Contenders

- Xander Schauffele - beat Jon Rahm 4&3 in the 2025 singles, a game suited to match play
- Collin Morikawa - one of the best ball-strikers in the game, and the man who halved with Tyrrell Hatton in the match that sealed Europe's 2025 win
- Cameron Young - part of Keegan Bradley's 2025 team at Bethpage
Potential Team Europe Contenders
- Rory McIlroy - Europe's talisman, with multiple Ryder Cup appearances and a burning desire to win. McIlroy's passion for the Ryder Cup is unmatched
- Viktor Hovland - the Norwegian star who has become a key figure for Team Europe

- Tommy Fleetwood - a proven Ryder Cup performer and a member of the winning sides in 2023 and 2025
Ryder Cup History
The Ryder Cup was first played in 1927 at Worcester Country Club in Massachusetts, between the United States and Great Britain. The team officially became Great Britain and Ireland in 1973, though Irish players had played before then. Continental European players joined in 1979, a change that transformed the competition from an American procession into a genuine contest.
The European Renaissance
The expansion to include continental Europe coincided with the emergence of Seve Ballesteros, who became the spiritual heart of European Ryder Cup golf. Europe's first victory under the new format came in 1985 at The Belfry, and the competition has been fiercely contested ever since.
Iconic Moments
- 1999 - Brookline - the "Battle of Brookline," where the Americans came back from 10-6 down going into Sunday to win 14½-13½, remains one of the most controversial and electrifying Ryder Cups ever played
- 2012 - Medinah - Europe's "Miracle at Medinah," where they overcame a 10-6 deficit going into singles Sunday to win 14.5-13.5 in one of the greatest sporting comebacks
- 2018 - Le Golf National - Europe dominated on home soil in Paris, winning 17½-10½ under captain Thomas Bjørn
- 2023 - Marco Simone - the first Ryder Cup held in Italy, at the Marco Simone Golf and Country Club near Rome. Europe won 16½-11½
- 2025 - Bethpage Black - Europe won 15-13, its first away win since 2012, after the Americans nearly overturned a seven-point deficit on Sunday. Shane Lowry's putt on the 18th retained the cup
Overall Record
The overall series is closely contested. The United States leads in total victories, but Europe has been the dominant force in the modern era, winning the majority of contests since the expansion to include continental European players.
The Captaincy
Both captains for Adare Manor have been named. Luke Donald leads Europe for a third straight time, after winning in Rome in 2023 and at Bethpage in 2025. No captain has ever led a side to three consecutive Ryder Cup wins. Jim Furyk captains the United States for the second time, having led the American team at Le Golf National in 2018.
The Ryder Cup captain holds enormous responsibility. Unlike regular tour events, where players make all their own decisions, the captain controls:
- Pairings - who plays together in foursomes and fourballs
- Session strategy - which players play in which sessions, and who sits out
- Singles order - the crucial lineup for the final day
- Captain's picks - the discretionary selections that complete the team
Great captaincy can inspire a team to perform beyond their individual abilities. Poor decisions can undermine even the most talented roster.
How to Follow the Ryder Cup Live
The Ryder Cup's simultaneous match play format makes it one of the most exciting events to follow live. With up to four matches happening at the same time, the overall score can shift rapidly.
Following individual matches hole by hole, with one eye on the overall team score, is the best way to watch it. The Ryder Cup is golf at its most emotional, and following it live amplifies the experience enormously.
Frequently Asked Questions
