Europe arrived at Bethpage Black as the away side and left with the trophy. On paper it finished 15-13. In practice it was two matches. The first lasted two days and Europe won it by a street. The second was Sunday, and the Americans nearly stole the lot.
The 45th Ryder Cup was played from September 26 to 28, 2025, on the Black Course at Bethpage State Park in Farmingdale, New York. Luke Donald led Europe. Keegan Bradley led the United States.
The Captains
Donald came to New York as the defending captain, having won 16½ to 11½ at Marco Simone in 2023. As a player he appeared in four Ryder Cups and won all four.
Bradley was a surprise appointment. He was named on July 8, 2024, and was 39 at the time of the match, the youngest American captain since Arnold Palmer took the job at 34 in 1963. He knew Bethpage well. As a collegian at St. John's University he played it often, on Mondays when the course was closed to the public.
Friday and Saturday: Europe Runs Away With It
The opening morning set the tone. Europe won the first three Friday foursomes matches, the first time that had happened on American soil.
It never really let up. Europe won each of the first four sessions, something it had never done away from home. It also won the four-ball battle for the first time since 2010.
By Saturday evening the board read Europe 11½, United States 4½. Bethpage was meant to suit the home side. For two days it belonged to Europe.
That seven-point lead was the biggest heading into a final day in the modern era. Europe had at least 11½ points before the singles for the first time since 1979.
The course played its part. Bradley had thinned the rough to suit the American hitters, but heavy rain softened the greens and they never firmed up the way Bethpage normally does. "We tried to set the course up to help our team," Bradley said afterwards. "Obviously, it wasn't the right decision."
Sunday: The American Charge
The maths was simple and brutal. The United States needed 10 of the 12 singles points to complete the biggest comeback in Ryder Cup history. Europe needed 2½ to win, or 2 to retain.
Before a ball was struck, the Americans had half a point. Viktor Hovland withdrew with a neck injury, and under the long-standing envelope rule Harris English, the player Bradley had named to sit out in that event, was stood down. The match was halved.
Then the red started to spread across the board. Cameron Young, the local man who got a rapturous reception on the tee, beat Justin Rose 1 up. Justin Thomas holed out from the fairway at the 6th and birdied the 18th from 12 feet to beat Tommy Fleetwood 1 up.
Scottie Scheffler beat Rory McIlroy 1 up. Xander Schauffele handled Jon Rahm 4 and 3. J.J. Spaun beat Sepp Straka 2 and 1, and Ben Griffin beat Rasmus Højgaard.
The match that summed up the afternoon was Bryson DeChambeau against Matt Fitzpatrick. DeChambeau was five down after seven holes. He clawed it back to one down through 15 and earned a half.
Europe's only full point of the day came from Ludvig Åberg, who beat Patrick Cantlay 2 and 1. One singles win from 12. On most Sundays that loses you a Ryder Cup.
The Clinching Moment
It came down to Shane Lowry. Playing the 18th against Russell Henley, he holed a birdie putt from six feet to get Europe to 14 points and keep the cup.
Retaining is not winning, though. That fell to Tyrrell Hatton, whose half with Collin Morikawa took Europe to 14½ and made it outright. Robert MacIntyre also halved with Sam Burns.
Lowry called it "the hardest couple of hours of my whole life."
Donald put it more simply. "It's been the most stressful 12 hours in my life. I couldn't be more proud of these guys."
Records and Standouts
The United States took 8½ singles points, matching the best American singles total since 1979, the year the 12-match singles format began. Europe's single singles win was its lowest total in more than six decades.
Hatton finished unbeaten at 3-0-1. Lowry was also unbeaten at 1-0-2. Fleetwood won more holes than anyone, 21 in all. McIlroy now has six Ryder Cup wins to his name.
On the other side, Scheffler lost a match in each of the first four sessions, the first American to do so. He still beat McIlroy on Sunday.
The 15-13 margin made it the closest Ryder Cup since 2012. Europe has now won five of its last ten away matches, going back to the first in 1987, and 11 of the last 15 overall.
Donald joined Tony Jacklin, who won in 1985 and 1987, as the only European captains to win back-to-back Ryder Cups, and to do it both at home and away.
Bradley took the defeat with grace. He called the week "the most fun thing I've ever done in my life."
What It Means for Adare Manor 2027
The next Ryder Cup is at Adare Manor in County Limerick, Ireland, from September 13 to 19, 2027, with the matches on the final three days. It marks the centenary of the competition and the second Ireland has hosted, after The K Club in 2006. The Tom Fazio course was extensively renovated in 2017.
Donald will be back. He has been named European captain for a third straight time. If Europe wins in Limerick, he becomes the first captain in Ryder Cup history to lead three consecutive victories.
One piece of unfinished business followed everyone home from New York. Bradley said the injury rule that halved Hovland's match "has to change" before the next edition. Donald defended it: "The rule is the rule, and it's been in place for a long time."
Bethpage proved Europe can be beaten on a Sunday. It also proved the Americans cannot afford to spot them seven points first. Our Ryder Cup 2027 preview covers the venue, qualification and the teams taking shape.
